The world of conflicts in Chinua Achebe’s Arrow of God

Résumé

The object of this article is to analyze the conflictual features of Chinua Achebe’s Arrow of God. As a historian of his time, Achebe presents the image of conflicts within a particular historical background of the Ibo-land in his fictional world. In fact, the opposition between characters makes Arrow of God a conflictual novel. Indeed, Achebe’s Arrow of God reveals the dramatic world of conflicts opposing Ezeulu the chief priest of Ulu and the British captain T.K. Winterbotton, Ezeulu and his clan and God, Umuaro and Okperi, and the conflict within Ezeulu’s family. In other words, the novel re-veals the conflict prevailing between the Ibo ruling system and culture against the western’s administration and culture. As for the scientific interest, the psychological and sociological approaches are of great help.
