Religion and materialism in african drama : the case study of Wole Soyinka’s the trials of brother jero

Seduced and obsessed by the temptress prophecies and corrupt speech of Prophet Jeremy, the Faithful supposed to embody reservedly and humbly God’s missions have not hesitated to follow him uncontrollably and frantically as their new God sender or messiah. Amope and her wife Chume as integral members of Christ optimists cross soldier’s trends have eventually smeared the tears of disappointment and disillusionment. Wole Soyinka, one of the most outstanding playwrights of Nigerian literature, even African’s, through his play, The Trials of Brother Jero, depicts acutely how facilities and commodities exert an influence on African new Christians’ behaviour till soaking some of them into apostates. Brother Jeroboam in the pursuit of sparkling materialism and sordid cult of personality calls his brother of the same church-goers: ‘’ customers’’. Marxism theory will bring me referential literary material to show how religion needs reformist attitudes as weell as conversion of mentalities to stay everlastly an efficient instrument of educa-tion.
